🇮🇹 “CATFISHING” L’ARTE DELL’INGANNO

Una riflessione per la III Domenica di Avvento B (17-12-2023)

I.
Le piattaforme di Facebook e Instagram hanno più di 4 miliardi di utenti. Tra questi ci sono decine di milioni di profili falsi (fake profiles). Coloro che creano questi profili falsi sono detti “catfish” che vuol dire pescegatto (la scelta di questo nome non è chiara: forse per essere un pesce predatore, o per significare un’identità falsa come quella di un pesce che si finge un gatto). Creare profili falsi rubando l’identità di un altro, è una reato, como si può vedere sul sito del Ministero di Giustizia.
Ma perché qualcuno crea un profilo falso? I motivi possono essere diversi. Qualcuno usa immagini e dati di altri per aumentare la propria visibilità pensando che se presentasse la propria vera identità non risulti così interessante.
Altri creano profili falsi per mantenere l’anonimato mentre spiano o attaccano codardamente un altro. Altri lo fanno per aggirare, truffare, estorcere denaro. Molti per burla inventano relazioni amorose fasulle: in Internet si trovano molti casi eclatanti di catfishing, alcuni con epilogo tragico, come il suicidio di quel giovani che scoprì che la sua adorata fidanzata che conosceva solo online in realtà era un sessantaquattrenne che si era preso gioco di lui e che a sua volta si suicidò travolto dal clamore suscitato da questo caso.).
Come smascherare i fake profiles e i catfish? Esigendo oltre l’incontro online anche quello reale. Se questo non avviene adducendo molte scuse, molto probabilmente è un inganno. Se domenica scorsa dicevo che non “fidarsi degli altri è peggio”, in questi casi invece diffidare è meglio. Non bisogna mai fidarsi di chi non mostra chiaramente la sua identità.
II.
Anche Giovanni Battista, come abbiamo sentito nel Vangelo di oggi, avrebbe potuto essere un catfish, e approfittare delle circostanze a lui favorevoli per farsi passare per il Messia (tanti già lo ritenevano tale). Lui invece chiarisce subito l’equivoco (certamente non generato da lui) dichiarando: «Io non sono il Cristo». Giovanni aveva già molti discepoli e “followers” e sarebbe stato facile cavalcare l’onda del successo. Invece afferma di non essere neppure Elia né nessun altro dei profeti.
A volte capita che qualcuno si costruisca un’immagine ideale di noi tutta sua, e ci attribuisce qualità o meriti che non abbiamo. Sta a noi non alimentare le illusioni e chiarire chi siamo veramente. Non dobbiamo tenere le persone legate a noi o mantenere la loro stima facendoci credere diversi da come siamo, l’inganno non potrà durare a lungo. Se qualcuno ci stima per un’immagine ideale ma non reale, non stima noi, ma la rappresentazione di noi. Quanti rapporti finiscono perchè ci si è innamorati di una persona ideale ma non reale. Teniamoci stretti invece coloro che conoscono bene non solo le nostre qualità, ma anche i nostri difetti e ciononostante continuano a volerci bene.
Per non restare disillusi tante volte basta non farsi tante illusioni.
III.
Chi è allora Giovanni Battista? Non è il Cristo, ma uno che prepara il cammino verso Cristo. Il suo compito è quello di far conoscere colui che viene dopo di lui e che è ancora sconosciuto: “In mezzo a voi sta uno che voi non conoscete”. È questo anche il nostro compito di cristiani. Anche oggi Gesù non è ancora conosciuto da molti e sta a noi farlo conoscere. Conoscere Gesù è la ricchezza più grande che un uomo può possedere, così come il non conoscerlo è la più grande povertà. Il Papa San Giovanni Paolo II (nella Redemptoris Missio) ha detto che tutti gli uomini della terra hanno diritto di conoscere Cristo. E noi che abbiamo la grazia di conoscerlo, abbiamo anche il dovere di farlo conoscere. Rivelare agli uomini d’oggi che è Gesù quello che inconsciamente ricercano nella loro vita. Molti ricercano la felicità imbarcandosi in relazioni ambigue su internet come mendicanti in cerca di amore.
Nel suo bellissimo discorso nel giubileo dell’anno duemila, sempre Papa Giovanni Paolo II ha rivolto queste stupende parole: “In realtà, è Gesù che cercate quando sognate la felicità; è Lui che vi aspetta quando niente vi soddisfa di quello che trovate; è Lui la bellezza che tanto vi attrae; è Lui che vi provoca con quella sete di radicalità che non vi permette di adattarvi al compromesso; è Lui che vi spinge a deporre le maschere che rendono falsa la vita; -(i fake profiles)- è Lui che vi legge nel cuore le decisioni più vere che altri vorrebbero soffocare. E' Gesù che suscita in voi il desiderio di fare della vostra vita qualcosa di grande, la volontà di seguire un ideale, il rifiuto di lasciarvi inghiottire dalla mediocrità, il coraggio di impegnarvi con umiltà e perseveranza per migliorare voi stessi e la società, rendendola più umana e fraterna”.
IV.
Per concludere:
Oggi terza domenica di Avvento è detta anche domenica in gaudete, e cioè nella gioia (per questo usiamo i paramenti rosa). Ne abbiamo ben donde di essere nella gioia, perché si avvicina la memoria della nascita su questa terra di Gesù, il nostro Amato. Prepariamo anche noi le strade della sua venuta gridando come Giovanni Battista nei deserti di senso del nostro tempo. Buttiamo via tutte le maschere e i profili falsi. Lasciamo pure che i catfishes caccino le loro prede: noi siamo già stati catturati da Cristo, e tutto il resto ci avanza.

As plataformas Facebook e Instagram têm mais de 4 mil milhões de utilizadores. Entre eles, há dezenas de milhões de perfis falsos (fake profiles). Aqueles que criam esses perfis falsos são chamados de "catfish", que significa peixe-gato (a escolha desse nome não é clara: talvez para ser um peixe predador, ou para significar uma identidade falsa como a de um peixe que finge ser um gato). Criar perfis falsos roubando a identidade de outrem é crime (como se pode ver no sítio do Ministério da Justiça).
Mas porque é que alguém cria um perfil falso? As razões podem ser várias. Alguns utilizam imagens e dados de outros para aumentar a própria visibilidade, pensando que, se apresentarem a sua verdadeira identidade, não serão tão interessantes. Outros criam perfis falsos para manter o anonimato enquanto espiam ou atacam cobardemente outra pessoa. Outros fazem-no para enganar, burlar, extorquir dinheiro. Muitos inventam falsas relações amorosas como uma brincadeira: na Internet há muitos casos gritantes de catfishing, alguns com finais trágicos, como o suicídio do jovem que descobriu que a sua ‘amada namorada’, que só conhecia online, era na realidade um homem de 64 anos que brincava com ele e que, por sua vez, se suicidou, abalado pela clamor causado por este caso.)
Como desmascarar os perfis falsos e o peixe-gato? Exigindo além do encontro online também um encontro real. Se isso não for feito alegando muitas desculpas, é muito provável que se trate de um engano. Se no domingo passado eu disse que "não confiar nos outros é pior", nestes casos, desconfiar é melhor. Nunca se deve confiar naqueles que não mostram claramente a sua identidade.
II.
Até João Batista, como ouvimos no Evangelho de hoje, poderia ter sido um catfish, aproveitando as circunstâncias que lhe eram favoráveis para se fazer passar pelo Messias (muitos já acreditavam que ele o era). Em vez disso, esclarece imediatamente o mal-entendido (certamente não gerado por ele), declarando: "Eu não sou o Cristo". João já tinha muitos discípulos e ”followers” e teria sido fácil aproveitar a onda de sucesso. Em vez disso, ele afirma que não é Elias nem nenhum dos profetas.
Por vezes, acontece que alguém constrói uma imagem ideal de nós, atribuindo-nos qualidades ou méritos que não temos. Cabe-nos a nós não alimentar ilusões e esclarecer quem realmente somos. Não devemos manter as pessoas apegadas a nós ou manter a sua estima fazendo-as crer que somos diferentes do que somos, o engano não durará muito tempo. Se alguém nos estima por uma imagem ideal mas não real, não nos estima a nós, mas a nossa representação. Quantas relações terminam porque nos apaixonámos por uma pessoa ideal mas não real. Em vez disso, agarremo-nos àqueles que conhecem bem não só as nossas qualidades mas também os nossos defeitos e que, no entanto, continuam a amar-nos.
Para não nos desiludirmos muitas vezes, basta não ter tantas ilusões.
III.
Quem é então João Batista? Ele não é o Cristo, mas aquele que prepara o caminho para Cristo. A sua tarefa é dar a conhecer aquele que vem depois dele e que é ainda desconhecido: "No meio de vós está aquele que não conheceis". Esta é também a nossa tarefa como cristãos. Ainda hoje Jesus não é conhecido por muitos e cabe-nos a nós torná-lo conhecido. Conhecer Jesus é a maior riqueza que um homem pode possuir, tal como não o conhecer é a maior pobreza. O Papa São João Paulo II (na Redemptoris Missio) disse que todos os homens da terra têm o direito de conhecer Cristo. E nós, que temos a graça de o conhecer, temos também o dever de o dar a conhecer. Revelar aos homens de hoje que é Jesus que eles procuram inconscientemente nas suas vidas. Muitos procuram a felicidade embarcando em relações ambíguas na Internet, como mendigos em busca de amor.
No seu belo discurso aos jovens por ocasião do jubileu do ano dois mil, o Papa João Paulo II pronunciou estas palavras maravilhosas: "Na realidade, é Jesus quem buscais quando sonhais a felicidade; é Ele quem vos espera, quando nada do que encontrais vos satisfaz; Ele é a beleza que tanto vos atrai; é Ele quem vos provoca com aquela sede de radicalidade que não vos deixa ceder a compromissos; é Ele quem vos impele a depor as máscaras que tornam a vida falsa; -(os fake profiles)- é Ele quem vos lê no coração as decisões mais verdadeiras que outros quereriam sufocar. É Jesus quem suscita em vós o desejo de fazer da vossa vida algo de grande, a vontade de seguir um ideal, a recusa de vos deixardes submergir pela mediocridade, a coragem de vos empenhardes, com humildade e perseverança, no aperfeiçoamento de vós próprios e da sociedade, tornando-a mais humana e fraterna".
IV.
Para concluir:
O terceiro domingo do Advento é também chamado domingo in gaudete, ou seja, na alegria (por isso usamos paramentos cor-de-rosa). Temos boas razões para estarmos alegres, porque se aproxima a memória do nascimento nesta terra de Jesus, o nosso Amado. Preparemos também nós os caminhos da sua vinda, gritando como João Batista nos desertos de sentido do nosso tempo. Deitemos fora todas as máscaras e perfis falsos. Deixemos também que os catfishes cacem a sua presa: nós já fomos apanhados por Cristo, e o resto não importa.

The Facebook and Instagram platforms have more than 4 billion users. Among them are tens of millions of fake profiles. Those who create these fake profiles are called 'catfish' which means catfish (the choice of this name is unclear: perhaps to be a predatory fish, or to mean a fake identity like a fish pretending to be a cat). Creating fake profiles by stealing the identity of another is a crime, as can be seen on the Ministry of Justice website.
But why does someone create a fake profile? There can be several reasons. Some use images and data of others to increase their own visibility, thinking that if they present their real identity, they will not be as interesting.
Others create fake profiles to maintain anonymity while spying on or cowardly attacking another. Others do it to cheat, swindle, extort money. Many invent fake love relationships as a joke: on the Internet there are many egregious cases of catfishing, some with tragic endings, such as the suicide of the young man who discovered that his beloved girlfriend whom he only knew online was actually a 64-year-old man who had made fun of him and who in turn committed suicide overwhelmed by the uproar caused by this case).
How to unmask fake profiles and catfish? By demanding not only an online meeting but also a real one. If this is not done by making many excuses, it is most likely deception. If I said last Sunday that not 'trusting others is worse', in these cases instead distrusting is better. One should never trust those who do not clearly show their identity.
II.
Even John the Baptist, as we heard in today's Gospel, could have been a catfish, and taken advantage of the circumstances favourable to him to pass himself off as the Messiah (many already believed him to be such). Instead, he immediately clears up the misunderstanding (certainly not generated by him) by declaring: 'I am not the Christ'. John already had many disciples and 'followers' and it would have been easy to ride the wave of success. Instead, he claims that he is not Elijah or any of the prophets.
Sometimes it happens that someone builds up an ideal image of us all their own, and attributes qualities or merits to us that we do not have. It is up to us not to foster illusions and to clarify who we really are. We must not keep people attached to us or maintain their esteem by making them believe we are different from what we are, the deception will not last long. If someone esteems us for an ideal but not real image, they do not esteem us, but the representation of us. How many relationships end because one has fallen in love with an ideal but not real person. Instead, let us hold on to those who know well not only our qualities but also our faults and yet continue to love us.
In order not to be disillusioned many times, it is enough not to have so many illusions.
III.
Who then is John the Baptist? He is not the Christ, but one who prepares the way to Christ. His task is to make known the one who comes after him and who is still unknown: "In the midst of you stands one whom you do not know". This is also our task as Christians. Even today Jesus is not yet known by many and it is up to us to make him known. To know Jesus is the greatest wealth a man can possess, just as not knowing him is the greatest poverty. Pope St John Paul II (in Redemptoris Missio) said that all men on earth have the right to know Christ. And we who have the grace to know him, also have the duty to make him known. To reveal to the people of today that it is Jesus that they unconsciously seek in their lives. Many seek happiness by embarking on ambiguous relationships on the internet like beggars in search of love.
In his beautiful speech at the jubilee of the year two thousand, Pope John Paul II addressed these wonderful words: "In reality, it is Jesus whom you seek when you dream of happiness; it is He who waits for you when nothing satisfies you of what you find; it is He the beauty that so attracts you; it is He who provokes you with that thirst for radicality that does not allow you to adapt to compromise; it is He who urges you to lay down the masks that make life false; -(the fake profiles)- it is He who reads in your heart the truest decisions that others would like to stifle. It is Jesus who arouses in you the desire to make something great of your life, the will to follow an ideal, the refusal to let yourselves be swallowed up by mediocrity, the courage to commit yourselves with humility and perseverance to improve yourselves and society, making it more human and fraternal".
IV.
To conclude:
Today's Third Sunday of Advent is also called Sunday in laetare, i.e. in joy (which is why we use pink vestments). We have good reason to be in joy, because the memory of the birth on this earth of Jesus, our Beloved, is approaching. Let us also prepare the roads of his coming by shouting like John the Baptist in the deserts of meaning of our time. Let us throw away all masks and false profiles. Let us also let the catfish hunt their prey: we have already been caught by Christ, and all the rest is ahead of us.
