🇮🇹 LA VIA CRUCIS DI LACHAPELLE E TEDUA

Una riflessione per la XXXIV Domenica del Tempo Comune (26-11-2023)
< Mt 25,31-46 (Giudizio finale) Cristo Re.
I.
Un mese fa sono andato qui a Roma all'inaugurazione della bellissima esposizione "The stations of the Cross" di David LaChapelle (mostra che chiude il 25 novembre). LaChapelle è un artista che amo molto, celeberrimo, iconico e uno dei più geniali fotografi statunitensi le cui opere tra il barocco moderno e kitsch si rifanno allo stile surrealista e pop-art. Suo maestro è stato per l'appunto Andy Wharol. Appare nella top ten della cosiddetta "staged photography" con le sue rappresentazioni fatte di apparati scenici bem costruiti, dalla forte teatralità.
Per rappresentare Gesù nel cammino della Croce ha scelto il rap e attore italiano Tedua, perché dice lui, "I suoi occhi capaci di perdono e il suo volto poetico hanno la sensibilità perfetta per raffigurare Gesù Cristo. Ho cercato per sei lunghi mesi la persona giusta per questa serie e lui era semplicemente perfetto." Tra i vari commentaristi della mostra qualcuno ha scritto: "Il Cristo di LaChapelle è a tratti divino e umano e proprio per questo la mostra è un capolavoro." Per realizzare queste 15 stazioni della Via Crucis LaChapelle dice aver pregato molto: "Questa tradizione delle stazioni della Via Crucis era un mistero per me e volevo imparare a conoscerla e ad adattarla in modo contemporaneo." E, per il fatto di essere stato spesso considerato un artista dissacratore, ci tiene a precisare a riguardo di questi suoi quadri "che non si tratta di prese in giro, che non sono opere blasfeme ma che queste immagini onorano Gesù". E sono d'accordo con lui. Le sue opere sono affascinanti e attraggono soprattutto i giovani che a quell'inaugurazione dov'era presente lo stesso artista, erano accorsi a centinaia. L'unico coi capelli bianchi ero io.
La sua pop-art dice un altro commentarista, diventa "un espediente per ricondurre il suo pubblico, (fatto soprattutto di giovani), a un rispetto e ad un’adorazione divina, a un’attenzione spirituale necessaria per vivere le grandi crisi dei nostri tempi". In un intervista LaChapelle afferma: <<Abbiamo davvero bisogno di una guida per vivere. La Bibbia lo è. Le religioni ci danno un modo per trattare gli altri. “Ama il tuo prossimo come te stesso”. È bellissimo. Il perdono, il non essere avidi, il dare ai poveri, il prendersi cura delle persone, il rispettare i propri genitori. Sono cose bellissime. Non mentire, non spettegolare. Si trova tutto nella Bibbia">>.
II.
L'elenco delle "cose buone da fare nella vita" lo ritroviamo nel brano di Vangelo di questa domenica sul giudizio finale, un elenco ripetuto ben quattro volte lungo la narrazione, come se Gesù volesse imprimerlo bene nella nostra mente a forza di ripeterlo. Le opere buone da fare qui descritte, come sottolinea il bravo esegeta Fernando Armellini, si ritrovano anche in altri codici morali del tempo. Ce n'è una però che non appare in nessun altro testo, è quella di visitare i carcerati. Soccorrere gli affamati, gli ammalati, gli ignudi era qualcosa di assodato, perchè vittime di un male di cui non hanno colpa. Ma un carcerato è condannato per un male che ha deliberatamente scelto di fare, e quindi che paghi le conseguenze. Non suscita nessuna compassione. E' Gesù che amplia il cerchio della compassione, includendo anche chi si è macchiato dal male che ha scelto di compiere. Perché tutti hanno diritto alla misericordia. Non solo chi è vittima del male ma anche chi ne è fautore. Qualcuno ha detto che perdonare i colpevoli è un'ingiustizia nei confronti delle vittime. Giustizia non è solo punire il colpevole, ma è aiutarlo a guarire dal suo male.
Oggi è l'ultima domenica dell'anno liturgico ed è anche la festa di Cristo Re. La regalità di Cristo non si manifesta in una marcia trionfale accompagnato da eserciti, ma nel cammino della Croce che porta a un trono non fatto di oro e corone di diamanti, ma di assi incrociate e corone di spine.
III.
Per concludere.
Un giorno chiesero a LaChapelle: "Lei si rifugia mai nella preghiera?" e lui rispose:
"Sì, prego sempre. A volte da solo, a volte con gli amici. Prego per la salute delle persone, per gratitudine e ringraziamento, per avere saggezza e più autocontrollo. Prego di percorrere il cammino che Dio vuole per me, e di essere la persona che Lui vuole che io sia".
Il cammino da percorrere che Dio vuole per noi, è il Cammino della Croce, non tanto come cammino di sofferenza, ma come cammino di perdono. Le ultime parole di Gesù sulla croce furono di perdono: "Padre perdona loro che non sanno quello che fanno" e al condannato accanto a Lui disse: "Oggi sarai con me in Paradiso". Allora se il culmine del cammino della Croce è sentirsi dire da Gesù "Oggi sarai con me in Paradiso", ecco che il Cammino della Croce è il Cammino verso il Paradiso.
La Via Crucis di LaChapelle e Tedua non si ferma alla XIV stazione come le vie crucis tradizionali con Gesù riposto nel sepolcro, ma loro vi hanno aggiunto una XV stazione, quella di Gesù che ascende al cielo, perché il punto finale del nostro cammino non è sottoterra, ma in cielo, nel Paradiso.

Uma reflexão para o XXXIV Domingo do Tempo Comum (26-11-2023)

I.
Há um mês fui aqui em Roma à inauguração da bela exposição "The Stations of the Cross" (As estações da Cruz) de David LaChapelle (a exposição termina no 25 de novembro). LaChapelle é um artista de que gosto muito, muito famoso, icónico e um dos mais brilhantes fotógrafos americanos, cujas obras, entre o barroco moderno e o kitsch, remetem para o estilo surrealista e a pop-art. O seu mestre foi Andy Warhol. Aparece no top ten da chamada "staged photography" (fotografia encenada) com as suas representações feitas com aparatos cénicos bem feitos e com uma forte teatralidade.
Para retratar Jesus na Via Sacra, escolheu o artista rap e ator italiano Tedua, porque, segundo ele, "os seus olhos indulgentes e o seu rosto poético têm a sensibilidade perfeita para retratar Jesus Cristo. Procurei durante seis longos meses a pessoa certa para esta série e ele era simplesmente perfeito". Entre os vários comentadores da exposição, alguém escreveu: "O Cristo de LaChapelle é por vezes divino e humano, e por isso mesmo a exposição é uma obra-prima." Para realizar estas 15 estações da Via Sacra, LaChapelle diz que rezou muito: "Esta tradição das estações da Via Sacra era um mistério para mim e eu queria aprender sobre ela e adaptá-la de uma forma contemporânea". E, devido ao facto de ter sido muitas vezes considerado um artista profanador, faz questão de esclarecer, em relação a estes seus quadros, "que não se trata de escárnio, que não são obras blasfemas, mas que estas imagens honram Jesus". E eu concordo com ele. As suas obras são fascinantes e atraem sobretudo os jovens, que acorreram às centenas à inauguração, onde o próprio artista esteve presente. O único que tinha cabelo branco era eu.
A sua pop-art, diz outro comentador, torna-se "um expediente para conduzir o seu público (constituído principalmente por jovens) de volta a um respeito e adoração divinos, a uma atenção espiritual necessária para viver as grandes crises do nosso tempo". Numa entrevista, LaChapelle afirma: <<Precisamos realmente de um guia para viver. A Bíblia é um deles. As religiões dão-nos uma forma de tratar os outros. "Ama o teu próximo como a ti mesmo". É muito bonito. Perdoar, não ser ganancioso, dar aos pobres, cuidar das pessoas, respeitar os pais. Estas são coisas belas. Não mentir, não fazer mexericos. Está tudo na Bíblia">>.
II.
Encontramos a lista das "coisas boas a fazer na vida" na passagem do Evangelho deste domingo sobre o Juízo Final, uma lista repetida nada menos que quatro vezes ao longo da narração, como se Jesus quisesse gravá-la bem na nossa mente à força da repetição. As boas obras a praticar aqui descritas, como salienta o bom exegeta Fernando Armellini, encontram-se também noutros códigos morais da época. Há uma, porém, que não aparece em nenhum outro texto: a visita aos presos. Aliviar os famintos, os doentes, os nus era algo estabelecido, porque eles eram vítimas de um mal do qual não tinham culpa. Mas um prisioneiro é condenado por um mal que escolheu deliberadamente fazer, por isso que pague as consequências. Não suscita qualquer compaixão. É Jesus que alarga o círculo da compaixão para incluir aqueles que estão manchados pelo mal que escolheram fazer. Porque todos têm direito à misericórdia. Não só os que são vítimas do mal, mas também os que o praticam. Alguém disse que perdoar os culpados é uma injustiça contra as vítimas. A justiça não consiste apenas em punir os culpados, mas em ajudá-los a sarar do seu mal.
Hoje é o último domingo do ano litúrgico e é também a festa de Cristo Rei. A realeza de Cristo não se manifesta numa marcha triunfal acompanhada de exércitos, mas no caminho da Cruz que conduz a um trono não feito de ouro e coroas de diamantes, mas de machados cruzados e coroas de espinhos.
III.
Para concluir.
Um dia perguntaram a LaChapelle: "Refugias-te alguma vez na oração?" e ele respondeu:
"Sim, rezo sempre. Às vezes sozinho, outras vezes com amigos. Rezo pela saúde das pessoas, por gratidão e ação de graças, por sabedoria e mais auto-controlo. Rezo para percorrer o caminho que Deus quer para mim e para ser a pessoa que Ele quer que eu seja".
O caminho que Deus quer que percorramos é a Via Sacra, não tanto como um caminho de sofrimento, mas como um caminho de perdão. As últimas palavras de Jesus na cruz foram de perdão: "Pai, perdoa-lhes que não sabem o que fazem" e ao condenado que estava ao seu lado disse: "Hoje estarás comigo no Paraíso". Assim, se o ponto culminante da Via Sacra é ouvir Jesus dizer "Hoje estarás comigo no Paraíso", então a Via Sacra é o Caminho para o Paraíso.
A Via-Sacra de LaChapelle e Tedua não termina com a 14ª estação, como a Via-Sacra tradicional, com Jesus colocado no túmulo, mas eles acrescentaram uma 15ª estação, a da subida de Jesus ao céu, porque o ponto final da nossa viagem não é debaixo da terra, mas no céu, no Paraíso.

A reflection for the XXXIV Sunday of Common Time (26-11-2023)
< Mt 25:31-46 (Final Judgement) Christ the King.
I.
A month ago I went here in Rome to the opening of the beautiful exhibition "The stations of the Cross" by David LaChapelle (the exhibition closes on 25 November). LaChapelle is an artist I love very much, very famous, iconic and one of the most brilliant American photographers whose works between modern baroque and kitsch refer to the surrealist and pop-art style. His master was Andy Warhol. He appears in the top ten of so-called 'staged photography' with his representations made of bemade scenic apparatuses with a strong theatricality.
To portray Jesus on the Way of the Cross he chose the Italian rap artist and actor Tedua, because he says, "His forgiving eyes and poetic face have the perfect sensitivity to portray Jesus Christ. I searched for six long months for the right person for this series and he was simply perfect". Among the various commentators on the exhibition, someone wrote: "LaChapelle's Christ is by turns divine and human, and for that very reason the exhibition is a masterpiece". To make these 15 Stations of the Cross LaChapelle says he prayed a lot: "This tradition of the Stations of the Cross was a mystery to me and I wanted to learn about it and adapt it in a contemporary way." And, due to the fact that he has often been considered a desecrating artist, he is keen to clarify with regard to these paintings of his "that they are not mockery, that they are not blasphemous works but that these images honour Jesus". And I agree with him. His works are fascinating and appeal especially to young people, who flocked in their hundreds to the opening where the artist himself was present. The only one with white hair was me.
His pop-art, says another commentator, becomes "an expedient to lead his audience, (made up mainly of young people), back to a divine respect and adoration, to a spiritual attention necessary to live through the great crises of our times". In an interview LaChapelle says: <<We really need a guide to live by. The Bible is one. Religions give us a way to treat others. 'Love your neighbour as yourself'. It is beautiful. Forgiveness, not being greedy, giving to the poor, taking care of people, respecting your parents. These are beautiful things. Don't lie, don't gossip. It is all in the Bible">>.
II.
We find the list of "good things to do in life" in this Sunday's Gospel passage on the Last Judgement, a list repeated no less than four times throughout the narrative, as if Jesus wanted to imprint it well in our minds by dint of repetition. The good works to be done described here, as the good exegete Fernando Armellini points out, can also be found in other moral codes of the time. There is one, however, that does not appear in any other text; it is that of visiting prisoners. Relieving the hungry, the sick, the naked was something established, because they were victims of an evil for which they were not to blame. But a prisoner is condemned for an evil he has deliberately chosen to do, so let him pay the consequences. He arouses no compassion. It is Jesus who widens the circle of compassion to include those who are tainted by the evil they have chosen to do. For all are entitled to mercy. Not only those who are victims of evil, but also those who are its perpetrators. Someone has said that forgiving the guilty is an injustice to the victims. Justice is not just punishing the guilty, but is helping them to heal from their evil.
Today is the last Sunday of the liturgical year and it is also the feast of Christ the King. Christ's kingship is not manifested in a triumphal march accompanied by armies, but in the way of the Cross that leads to a throne not made of gold and crowns of diamonds, but of crossed axes and crowns of thorns.
III.
To conclude.
One day they asked LaChapelle: "Do you ever take refuge in prayer?" and he replied:
"Yes, I always pray. Sometimes alone, sometimes with friends. I pray for people's health, for gratitude and thanksgiving, for wisdom and more self-control. I pray to walk the path God wants for me, and to be the person He wants me to be".
The path God wants for us to walk is the Way of the Cross, not so much as a path of suffering, but as a path of forgiveness. Jesus' last words on the cross were of forgiveness: "Father forgive them that they know not what they do" and to the condemned man beside Him He said: "Today you will be with me in Paradise". So if the culmination of the Way of the Cross is to hear Jesus say "Today you will be with me in Paradise", then the Way of the Cross is the Way to Paradise.
LaChapelle and Tedua's Way of the Cross does not stop at the 14th station like the traditional Way of the Cross with Jesus placed in the tomb, but they have added a 15th station, that of Jesus ascending to heaven, because the final point of our journey is not underground, but in heaven, in Paradise.
