I.

In questi anni a Broadway sta avendo un enorme successo il musical “Hamilton”, un'opera straordinaria che da oltre dieci anni fa il tutto esaurito ogni sera. Racconta la storia di Alexander Hamilton, uno dei Padri fondatori degli Stati Uniti. Hamilton arriva a New York giovanissimo. È un immigrato, povero, senza una famiglia importante, senza denaro, senza potere. Ma ha una straordinaria voglia di vivere e di costruire il proprio futuro. E nel musical continua a ripetere una frase: “I'm not throwing away my shot.” (Non sprecherò la mia occasione). “My shot” significa la mia occasione, la possibilità che la vita mi sta offrendo. Hamilton sa di partire quasi da zero, ma sa anche di avere una vita davanti. E non vuole sprecarla. In effetti non la sprecherà. Diventerà uno dei protagonisti della nascita degli Stati Uniti, il primo Segretario al Tesoro e lascerà un'impronta così profonda nella storia americana che, più di duecento anni dopo, la sua storia continua a essere raccontata.

II.

Anche il Vangelo ci parla di due persone che non hanno sprecato la loro vita: Maria ed Elisabetta. Una è giovanissima. L'altra è anziana. Maria ha appena ricevuto una notizia che sconvolge completamente i suoi progetti. Eppure si fida di Dio. E subito si mette in viaggio per andare da Elisabetta. Elisabetta, invece, avrebbe avuto tutti i motivi per pensare che ormai le grandi sorprese della vita fossero finite. Era anziana, non aveva avuto figli, probabilmente si era rassegnata a una vita nella quale non sarebbe successo più nulla di nuovo. E invece proprio allora Dio irrompe nella sua vita. Una è all'inizio della vita. L'altra è già avanti negli anni. Ma entrambe scoprono la stessa cosa: per Dio nessuna vita è una vita finita. Finché siamo vivi, possiamo ancora dare vita. Non necessariamente generando un figlio. Possiamo dare vita ridando speranza a chi l'ha perduta, facendo sentire qualcuno meno solo, ridando coraggio a chi è scoraggiato, perdonando, dicendo a qualcuno quanto gli vogliamo bene. Maria entra nella casa di Elisabetta e succede qualcosa di straordinario: porta gioia. Il bambino sussulta nel grembo di Elisabetta e Maria esplode nel Magnificat. E forse è questa una delle forme più belle di una vita riuscita: passare nella vita degli altri portando un po' di felicità. Perché le persone felici cambiano il mondo.

III.

In conclusione.

Oggi contempliamo Maria assunta in cielo. La sua vita è arrivata lontano perché è stata vissuta come un dono. Non ha sprecato la sua occasione: l'ha trasformata in gioia per gli altri. Ci sono persone che, quando arrivano, sono come un raggio di sole: portano luce, fanno respirare, fanno venire voglia di vivere. E ce ne sono altre che riescono a spegnere anche la poca luce che c'era. Tu che cosa porti nella vita degli altri? Hamilton diceva: “I'm not throwing away my shot.” Maria non l'ha detto. L'ha fatto. E tu? Non sprecare la tua occasione. Non sprecare il tempo che ti rimane. Non sprecare le persone che ami. Non sprecare questa vita meravigliosa che Dio ti ha dato.

I.

In recent years, the musical “Hamilton” has enjoyed extraordinary success on Broadway, selling out night after night for more than ten years. It tells the story of Alexander Hamilton, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Hamilton arrives in New York as a very young man. He is an immigrant, poor, without an influential family behind him, without money, without power. But he has an extraordinary desire to live and to build his own future. And throughout the musical, he keeps repeating one line: “I’m not throwing away my shot.” “My shot” means my opportunity, the chance that life is giving me. Hamilton knows that he is starting with almost nothing, but he also knows that he has his whole life ahead of him. And he does not want to waste it. In fact, he won’t. He will become one of the leading figures in the birth of the United States, the first Secretary of the Treasury, and he will leave such a profound mark on American history that, more than two hundred years later, his story is still being told.

II.

The Gospel also tells us about two people who did not waste their lives: Mary and Elizabeth. One is very young. The other is old. Mary has just received news that completely overturns all her plans. And yet she trusts God. She immediately sets out to visit Elizabeth. Elizabeth, on the other hand, would have had every reason to think that the great surprises of life were over for her. She was old, she had never had children, and she had probably resigned herself to a life in which nothing new would ever happen again. And yet, precisely at that moment, God breaks into her life. One is at the beginning of her life. The other is already advanced in years. But both discover the same thing: for God, no life is ever finished. As long as we are alive, we can still give life. Not necessarily by bringing a child into the world. We can give life by restoring hope to someone who has lost it, making someone feel less alone, giving courage to someone who is discouraged, forgiving, telling someone how much we love them. Mary enters Elizabeth’s home, and something extraordinary happens: she brings joy. The child leaps in Elizabeth’s womb, and Mary bursts into the Magnificat. And perhaps this is one of the most beautiful ways to live a fulfilled life: to pass through the lives of others bringing a little happiness. Because happy people change the world.

III.

In conclusion.

Today we contemplate Mary assumed into heaven. Her life went far because she lived it as a gift. She did not throw away her shot: she turned it into joy for others. There are people who, when they arrive, are like a ray of sunshine: they bring light, they help us breathe, they make us want to live. And there are others who somehow manage to put out even the little light that was already there. What do you bring into the lives of others? Hamilton used to say: “I’m not throwing away my shot.” Mary didn’t say it. She did it. And you? Don’t throw away your shot. Don’t waste the time you have left. Don’t waste the people you love. Don’t waste this wonderful life God has given you.

NÃO DESPERDICES A TUA OPORTUNIDADE (Alexander Hamilton)

I.

Nestes últimos anos, o musical “Hamilton” tem alcançado um enorme sucesso na Broadway, uma obra extraordinária que, há mais de dez anos, esgota os bilhetes todas as noites. Conta a história de Alexander Hamilton, um dos Pais Fundadores dos Estados Unidos. Hamilton chega a Nova Iorque ainda muito jovem. É um imigrante, pobre, sem uma família importante, sem dinheiro, sem poder. Mas tem uma extraordinária vontade de viver e de construir o seu próprio futuro. E, no musical, repete continuamente uma frase: “I'm not throwing away my shot.” (Não vou desperdiçar a minha oportunidade). “My shot” significa a minha oportunidade, a possibilidade que a vida me está a oferecer. Hamilton sabe que parte praticamente do zero, mas sabe também que tem uma vida inteira pela frente. E não quer desperdiçá-la. De facto, não a desperdiçará. Tornar-se-á um dos protagonistas do nascimento dos Estados Unidos, o primeiro Secretário do Tesouro, e deixará uma marca tão profunda na história americana que, mais de duzentos anos depois, a sua história continua a ser contada.

II.

Também o Evangelho nos fala de duas pessoas que não desperdiçaram a sua vida: Maria e Isabel. Uma é muito jovem. A outra é idosa. Maria acaba de receber uma notícia que muda completamente os seus projetos. E, no entanto, confia em Deus. E põe-se imediatamente a caminho para ir ao encontro de Isabel. Isabel, pelo contrário, teria todos os motivos para pensar que as grandes surpresas da vida já tinham terminado. Era idosa, não tinha tido filhos e provavelmente já se tinha resignado a uma vida na qual nada de novo voltaria a acontecer. E, no entanto, é precisamente nesse momento que Deus irrompe na sua vida. Uma está no início da vida. A outra já tem muitos anos. Mas ambas descobrem a mesma coisa: para Deus, nenhuma vida é uma vida acabada. Enquanto estivermos vivos, ainda podemos dar vida. Não necessariamente gerando um filho. Podemos dar vida devolvendo a esperança a quem a perdeu, fazendo alguém sentir-se menos sozinho, dando coragem a quem está desanimado, perdoando, dizendo a alguém quanto o amamos. Maria entra na casa de Isabel e acontece algo extraordinário: leva alegria. O menino salta de alegria no ventre de Isabel e Maria explode no Magnificat. E talvez esta seja uma das formas mais bonitas de uma vida realizada: passar pela vida dos outros levando um pouco de felicidade. Porque as pessoas felizes mudam o mundo.

III.

Em conclusão.Hoje contemplamos Maria elevada ao céu. A sua vida chegou longe porque foi vivida como um dom. Não desperdiçou a sua oportunidade: transformou-a em alegria para os outros. Há pessoas que, quando chegam, são como um raio de sol: trazem luz, fazem-nos respirar, dão-nos vontade de viver. E há outras que conseguem apagar até a pouca luz que já havia. E tu, o que levas à vida dos outros? Hamilton dizia: “I'm not throwing away my shot.” Maria não o disse. Fê-lo. E tu? Não desperdices a tua oportunidade. Não desperdices o tempo que te resta. Não desperdices as pessoas que amas. Não desperdices esta vida maravilhosa que Deus te deu.
