🇮🇹 “UN PROFESSORE”. L’occasione perduta di una splendida serie televisiva

Commento al Vangelo della Domenica 4 Febbraio 2024 (V. TO-B)
Mc 1,29-39 (La guarigione della suocera di Pietro)
I.
Fino a a pochi anni fa vedevo film e serie televisive quasi esclusivamente americani in quanto per me gli americani erano i principali maestri della settima arte. Ultimamente, grazie a piattaforme online che facilitano l’accesso a tanti film e serie di tutto il mondo, ho scoperto a sorpresa che ci sono tanti paesi inimmaginabili produttori di film e serie spettacolari addirittura migliori di quelli americani.
Anche in Italia recentemente sono stati prodotti film davvero belli, per non parlare delle serie televisive. Già avevo commentato la meravigliosa serie “Mare fuori” con le bellissime figure dei dirigenti e educatori del carcere minorile. Un’altra serie veramente bella è “Un professore” con i bravissimi attori tra il quali eccelle il Prof. di filosofia Dante Balestra (Alessandro Gassman). In ogni puntata viene presentata l’idea centrale di un filosofo che viene “usata” come risposta agli eventi che si succedono nello svolgersi di ogni capitolo.
Ero curioso di arrivare all’ultima puntata per conoscere la proposta conclusiva che veniva consegnata ai giovani studenti e (senza voler spoilerare) son rimasto profondamente deluso nel vedere che la proposta finale era quella di Epicuro. Quei cari studenti, così come tutti gli studenti del mondo meritano molto di più di Epicuro, o di Nietzsche o di tanti filosofi materialisti. La ricetta della felicità di Epicuro è semplicemente un’illusione: la felicità non è assenza di dolore o di paure, ma è presenza di un senso profondo che riempie di significato e bellezza la vita. Le ultime battute della lezione al parco, avevano suscitato una grande speranza, quando il Prof. alla domanda di Heidegger “Perché c’è qualcosa invece di nulla?” disse che quasi nessun filosofo c’è riuscito a dare una risposta, e che Sant’Agostino ritenesse questa una domanda inutile, “perché se uno crede (dice il Prof. Dante) la risposta ce l’ha dentro di sé, ma se uno come me non crede deve…” e qui si interrompe per andare ad abbracciare e baciare Anita, l’ultima fidanzata delle tante, che era sopraggiunta in quel momento. Non ho capito se non si è data una risposta perché non c'è una risposta, o se perché si è voluto dire che la risposta finale è l’amore. È vero che è l'amore, però quell'amore tra Dante e Anita era poco credibile. Non tanto per i trascorsi da donnaiolo del "Professore PeterPan" (chi non è capace di amare una donna sola è incapace di amare veramente) ma anche per i recentissimi tradimenti di entrambi, mentre erano impegnati uno con l'altra nella loro storia importante.
II.
Il Vangelo di questa domenica che narra della guarigione della suocera di Pietro ci parla di una malattia che deve essere debellata prima di mettersi al servizio degli altri e prima di fare qualsiasi altra cosa, come per esempio educare. Si tratta della malattia di vivere, che soffoca la nostra capacità di fare del bene inguaiandoci nei tentacoli del non senso, e cioè nella morsa del nichilismo e del vuoto assoluto che è la morte, la quale se considerata come l’ultima parola su di noi e sul mondo, svuota di ogni significato e bellezza la nostra esistenza. Se siamo prigionieri della malattia di vivere, e cioè se crediamo che alla fine di questa vita c'è solo la morte, come possiamo educare gli altri al grande mistero della vita? Varie filosofie e tradizioni religiose hanno tentato di dare risposta a questa questione fondamentale.
Gesù guarisce da questa febbre in modo radicale. Non si guarisce un cancro con le aspirine o con dei rimedi palliativi. Il male di vivere o il vuoto di senso non si guarisce con i ripetuti balbettìi dei filosofi i quali fanno bene il loro mestiere quando formulano le domande, ma sono un disastro quando tentano di dare le risposte. La risposta al perché della vita sta altrove. Sta nel totalmente Altro.
Il giorno dopo che oltre a guarire la suocera "guarì molti che erano affetti da varie malattie e scacciò molti demòni" , Gesù, continua il vangelo, "al mattino presto si alzò quando ancora era buio e, uscito, si ritirò in un luogo deserto, e là pregava". È nella relazione con Dio attraverso la preghiera che troviamo la risposta alle grandi domande della vita. Pietro invece, ancora più ammalato della suocera, rimprovera Gesù di stare a “perdere tempo” pregando, quando c’è così tanto da fare. È un rimprovero che ho sentito varie volte durante i miei 25 in missione in Brasile e Africa, da parte di chi "suggeriva" ai missionari di non perdere tempo e risorse per cose "spirituali" come evangelizzare, amministrare sacramenti, pregare e far pregare..., ma di dedicarsi a risolvere i problemi materiali delle persone. Ma a cosa vale vivere persino in un castello dorato se siamo afflitti da un cancro incurabile? Sarà che vivremo contenti? Non è più urgente guarire dalle nostre malattie per vivere meglio la nostra vita?
III.
In conclusione.
La serie "Un Professore" secondo me, oltre che ad essere un piacevole intrattenimento, poteva essere anche un'occasione educativa ancora migliore. Se a quella domanda cruciale ("Perché esiste qualcosa invece di nulla?”) il Prof. Dante invece di dire che lui non credeva, avesse rilanciato verso l'alto, verso il grande mistero del mondo e della vita, avrebbe aperto il cuore e la mente dei suoi studenti verso l'infinito. Dante, stavolta non il Professore, ma il Sommo Poeta della Divina Commedia, dopo essere uscito "a rivedere le stelle" termina il suo viaggio con la sua Beatrice guardando oltre con stupore, verso "l'Amore che muove il sole e le altre stelle". (Paradiso, XXXIII, v. 145).
Papa Francesco ha ripetuto più volte agli educatori in occasione del suo visionario progetto del Patto Educativo Globale che “Non possiamo tacere alle giovani generazioni le verità che danno senso alla vita”.
Ecco che allora, caro Prof. Dante Balestra, secondo me avresti potuto dire ai tuoi studenti che i nostri poveri amori zoppicanti acquistano le ali dell'infinito se inseriti in un orizzonte di senso, e cioè se inseriti nell'Amore infinito che muove il sole e le altre stelle. Perché, caro Prof. Dante, oltre che a camminare, dovremmo tentare di insegnare ai nostri cari studenti, anche a volare.

Mc 1,29-39 (A cura da sogra de Pedro)
I.
Até há alguns anos, eu costumava ver quase exclusivamente filmes e séries de televisão americanos, pois para mim os americanos eram os principais mestres da sétima arte. Ultimamente, graças às plataformas online que facilitam o acesso a muitos filmes e séries de todo o mundo, descobri surpreendentemente que há muitos países inimagináveis que produzem filmes e séries espectaculares que são ainda melhores do que os americanos.
Até em Itália se produziram recentemente filmes muito bons, para não falar de séries de televisão. Já tinha comentado a maravilhosa série "Mare fuori", com as belas figuras dos directores e educadores da prisão de menores. Outra série verdadeiramente bela é "Un professore", com muito bons actores, entre os quais se destaca o professor de filosofia Dante Balestra (Alessandro Gassman). Em cada episódio, a ideia central de um filósofo é apresentada e "usada" como resposta aos acontecimentos que ocorrem à medida que cada capítulo se desenrola.
Estava curioso para chegar ao último episódio para conhecer a proposta final que foi entregue aos jovens estudantes e (sem querer fazer um spoiler ) fiquei profundamente desiludido ao ver que a proposta final era a de Epicuro. Aqueles queridos estudantes, assim como todos os estudantes do mundo merecem muito mais do que Epicuro, ou Nietzsche ou tantos filósofos materialistas. A receita de Epicuro para a felicidade é simplesmente uma ilusão: a felicidade não é a ausência de dor ou medo, mas a presença de um significado profundo que enche a vida de sentido e beleza. As últimas palavra da aula no parque, tinham suscitado uma grande esperança, quando a pergunta de Heidegger "Porque é que há algo em vez de nada?” o Professor dizia que quase nenhum filósofo podia dar uma resposta, e que Santo Agostinho considerava esta pergunta inútil, "porque se alguém acredita (diz o Prof. Dante) tem a resposta dentro de si, mas se alguém como eu não acredita, tem de..." e aqui interrompe-se para ir abraçar e beijar Anita, a última namorada de muitas, que tinha chegado naquele momento. Não percebi se a resposta não foi dada porque não havia resposta, ou se foi porque quiseram dizer que a resposta final é o amor. É verdade que é amor, mas aquele amor entre Dante e Anita não era tão credível. Não tanto pelo passado mulherengo do "Professor PeterPan" (quem é incapaz de amar uma só mulher é incapaz de amar verdadeiramente), mas também pelas traições muito recentes de ambos, quando estavam envolvidos no seu importante caso.
II.
O Evangelho deste domingo, que narra a cura da sogra de Pedro, fala-nos de uma doença que é preciso erradicar antes de servir os outros e antes de fazer qualquer outra coisa, como educar. É a dor de viver, que sufoca a nossa capacidade de fazer o bem, enredando-nos nos tentáculos da falta de sentido, isto é, nas garras do niilismo e do vazio absoluto que é a morte, que, se considerada como a última palavra sobre nós e sobre o mundo, esvazia a nossa existência de todo o sentido e beleza. Se somos prisioneiros da dor de viver, ou seja, se acreditamos que no fim desta vida só existe a morte, como podemos educar os outros para o grande mistério da vida? Várias filosofias e tradições religiosas tentaram responder a esta questão fundamental.
Jesus cura esta febre de uma forma radical. Não se cura um cancro com aspirinas ou remédios paliativos. A dor de viver ou o vazio de sentido não se curam com a tagarelice repetida dos filósofos que fazem bem o seu trabalho quando formulam perguntas, mas são um desastre quando tentam dar respostas. A resposta ao porquê da vida está noutro lugar. Está no totalmente Outro.
No dia seguinte à cura da sogra, "curou muitos doentes de várias doenças e expulsou muitos demónios”, Jesus, continua o Evangelho, "levantou-se de manhã cedo, quando ainda estava escuro, saiu e retirou-se para um lugar deserto, e ali rezou". É na relação com Deus através da oração que encontramos a resposta às grandes questões da vida. Pedro, pelo contrário, ainda mais doente do que a sogra, censura Jesus por "perder tempo" a rezar, quando há tanto que fazer. É uma censura que ouvi várias vezes durante os meus 25 anos de missão no Brasil e em África, daqueles que "sugeriam" aos missionários que não perdessem tempo e recursos em coisas "espirituais" como evangelizar, administrar os sacramentos, rezar e fazer rezar..., mas que se dedicassem a resolver os problemas materiais das pessoas. Mas de que serve viver, mesmo num castelo de ouro, se formos atingidos por um cancro incurável? Viveremos felizes? Não será mais urgente curarmo-nos das nossas doenças para vivermos melhor a nossa vida?
III.
Em conclusão.
Na minha opinião, a série "Um Professor" poderia ter sido não só um entretenimento agradável, mas também uma oportunidade educativa ainda melhor. O Prof. Dante, em vez de dizer que não acreditava, tivesse feito un relance para o alto, para o grande mistério do mundo e da vida, teria aberto o coração e a mente dos seus estudantes para o infinito. Dante, desta vez não o Professor, mas o Poeta Supremo da Divina Comédia, depois de ter saído "para ver de novo as estrelas", termina a sua viagem com a sua Beatriz a olhar para além, para "o Amor que move o sol e as outras estrelas". (Paradiso, XXXIII, v. 145).
O Papa Francisco tem dito repetidamente aos educadores, por ocasião do seu projeto visionário do Pacto Educativo Global, que "não podemos esconder das novas gerações as verdades que dão sentido à vida".
Aqui, então, caro Prof. Dante Balestra, na minha opinião, poderia ter dito aos seus alunos que os nossos pobres amores coxos adquirem as asas do infinito se forem inseridos num horizonte de sentido, ou seja, se forem inseridos no Amor infinito que move o sol e as outras estrelas. Porque, caro Prof. Dante, para além de caminhar, devemos também tentar ensinar os nossos queridos estudantes a voar.

Commentary on the Gospel for Sunday 4 February 2024 (V. TO-B)
Mk 1:29-39 (The healing of Peter's mother-in-law)
I.
Until a few years ago, I used to almost exclusively watch American films and television series, as I believe that Americans were the primary masters of the seventh art. However, recently, with the help of online platforms that provide easy access to films and series from around the world, I have been pleasantly surprised to discover that there are numerous countries producing spectacular films and series that surpass even the American ones.
Even in Italy, there have been recent productions of really good films, not to mention television series. I previously mentioned the wonderful series 'Mare fuori' with showcases te figures of managers and educators in a juvenile prison. Another truly beautiful series is 'Un professore’, featuring talented actors, including philosophy professor Dante Balestra (Alessandro Gassman) who stands out. In each episode, a central idea from a philosopher is presented and 'used' as a response to the unfolding events.
I was curious to reach the last episode and discover the final proposal presented to the young students. However, without spoiling anything, I was deeply disappointed to find out that the final proposal was that of Epicurus. In my opinion, both the students in the series and students worldwide deserve more than just Epicurus or Nietzsche, or any materialist philosophers. Epicurus's recipe for happiness, which focuses on the absence of pain and fear, is simply an illusion. True happiness lies in finding deep meaning and beauty that enriches life.
The final words of the lecture in the park, had sparked great hope. When the Professor posed Heidegger's question “Why is there something instead of nothing?” He mentioned that very few philosophers could provide an answer. He also noted that St. Augustine considered it a futile question. “Because if one believes”, said Prof. Dante, “he has the answer within himself. But if one, like me, does not believe, one must…” At that moment, he interrupted himself to embrace and kiss Anita, his last girlfriend among many, who had just arrived”. I didn’t understand whether the answer wasn’t given because there is no answer, or if was meant to imply than the ultimate answer is love. While it is true that love holds significance, the love between Dante and Anita was hardly believable. Not only because of “Professor PeterPan’s” womanizing past (those who cannot love only one woman are incapable of truly loving), but also due to their very recent betrayals, while they were committed to each other in their significant story.
II.
This Sunday's Gospel, which tells the story of the healing of Peter's mother-in-law, remind us of the importance of addressing a disease before serving others or engaging in any other activities, , such as education. It's about the disease of living, that suffocates our ability to do good by trapping us in the grip of meaninglessness, that is, in the grip of nihilism and the absolute emptiness that is death. If we view death as the final word on ourselves and the world, it strips our existence of all meaning and beauty. How can we educate others about the profound mystery of life If we ourselves are prisoners of the disease of living? Various philosophies and religious traditions have attempted to tackle this fundamental question.
Jesus heals this fever in a radical manner. Cancer cannot be cured with aspirin or palliative remedies. The pain of living or the emptiness of meaning cannot be healed by the repetitive babbling of philosophers who excel at formulating questions, but fail when attending to provide answers. The answer to the why of life lies elsewhere. It resides in the completely Other.
The day after healing the Peter’s mother-in-law, the gospel tells us that Jesus “healed many who were afflicted with various diseases and cast out many demons". The gospel continues, stating that, Jesus "rose early in the morning while it was still dark and went to a deserted place to pray”. It is through our relationship with God and prayer that we discover the answer to life's profound questions. Peter, on the other hand, even sicker than his mother-in-law, reproaches Jesus for "wasting time" praying when there is so much to do. It is a reproach I heard several times during my 25 years on mission in Brazil and Africa, from those who 'suggested' to the missionaries not to waste time and resources on 'spiritual' things like evangelising, administering the sacraments, praying and having people pray..., but to dedicate themselves to solving people's material problems. But what is the point of living even in a golden castle if we are afflicted with an incurable cancer? Will we live happily? Is it not more urgent to heal from our illnesses in order to live our lives better?
III.
In conclusion, in my opinion, the series 'A Professor' ha the potential to be not only an enjoyable entertainment, but also a remarkable educational opportunity. If Prof Dante had approached that crucial question ('Why does something exist instead of nothing?') by raising it towards the profound mYsterY of the world and life, rather than stating his disbelief, he could have opened his students' hearts and minds towards the infinite. Dante, this time not the Professor, but the Supreme Poet of the Divine Comedy, after having gone out 'to see the stars again' ends his journey with his Beatrice looking beyond in wonder, towards 'the Love that moves the sun and the other stars'. (Paradiso, XXXIII, v. 145).
Pope Francis in his visionary “Global Compact on Education” project has emphasized the importance of not withholding from younger generations the truths that give meaning to life'.
Therefore, dear Prof. Dante Balestra, in my opinion, you could have conveyed to your students that our imperfect can transcend their limitation and soar towards infinity when they are grounded in a horizon of meaning, in the boundless Love that moves the sun and the other stars. Because, dear Prof. Dante, in addition to walking, we should also strive to teach our dear students how to fly.
